Action for Children

Action for Children is committed to helping the most vulnerable children and young people in the UK break through injustice, deprivation and inequality, so they can achieve their full potential.

Since we were founded in 1869, our values of passion, equality and hope have always been central to our work.  We have always fought to help children and young people overcome difficulty. We believe all children and young people have equal worth and equal rights.  And we believe in every child or young person's potential, no matter what they have experienced.

Today we work with nearly 170,000 children, young people and their families, through nearly 450 projects across the UK.

We work with children and young people whose families need support

Action for Children's young carers' projects offer children a break from caring, support from others in the same situation, and a chance to let off steam with organised activities and outings. Knowing that these breaks are available helps children continue to care and, ultimately, keeps families together.

We work with children and young people who cannot live with their birth families

/assets/playscheme-sep08.gifOur adoption services help find homes and families for children who, for whatever reason, cannot grow up with their birth family. We also have experienced foster carers from a range of backgrounds, ethnicities and religions who offer a variety of foster care placements, ranging from emergency and short term through to long term, remand and shared care.

We also run four specialist residential schools for children who have severe emotional and behavioural difficulties, or those who have profound disabilities, providing support, comfort and education.

We work with children and young people who are disabled

/assets/water-therapy-sep08.gifAction for Children is the UK's largest charity provider of disabled services for children and young people. We have nearly 58 disability projects across the UK, providing residential care, specialist play and education opportunities for children. We also provide support for families, giving them a break from their caring responsibilities and much-needed time with other siblings.

We are committed to protecting the rights of children and young people, and ensuring they are given the opportunity to fulfil their full potential. We especially believe in the importance of giving children and young people a ‘voice' - ensuring they are able to communicate their needs and choices, either vocally or physically.

We work with children and young people who experience severe difficulties in their lives

We also run therapeutic services for children who have suffered abuse. We help children through specialist counsellors, therapeutic play and art, and we work with non-abusive family members to maintain and rebuild relationships.

We really wouldn’t be able to help the UK’s most vulnerable children and young people without your support.  Thank you!
