The Suzy Lamplugh Trust
Suzy Lamplugh was an estate agent, who on 28 July 1986, left her office to show an unoccupied house to a client and was never seen again. She is presumed murdered. Her tragic disappearance highlighted the potential dangers in our everyday lives. More importantly it highlighted that had she taken some simple practical personal safety measures, she would probably still be here today.
As a result of Suzy's disappearance her parents, Paul and Diana Lamplugh were motivated to set up The Suzy Lamplugh Trust, the National Charity for Personal Safety. Research shows that whilst much personal safety is common sense it is often not common practice. We seek to change this through raising people's awareness of personal safety issues and to help people to develop the skills to recognize and respond to personal safely issues.
The Trust gives essential, practical guidance to help people:
- Keep the fear of crime in perspective
- Be aware of scenarios and locations where crime is more prevalent
- Diffuse conflict and aggression when it arises
- Minimize the likelihood of being a victim of violent crime
We do this through:
- Personal safety training
- Guidance booklets
- Conferences
- Consultancy
- Research
We also campaign and lobby government of key issues of public concern around personal safety such as stalking and safer mini cabs
Fear of crime in the UK is rising. This can lead to unnecessary fear for example; older people feeling more at risk than they are and young men feeling safer than they are. We aim to give people accurate information about the risks they face coupled with ways in which they can reduce those risks.
Personal safety is an issue for everyone, everywhere.
In order for us to continue our work donations such as those made through this service are invaluable.
